Winery Profile

Petrichor (pet-ri-kor), meaning the scent of rain on dry earth, is a small estate owned by Jim & Margaret Foley. Steve Matthiasson is the consulting viticulturist and Duncan Arnot Meyers, of Arnot-Roberts fame, is the winemaker. The 2.5 acres Petrichor Vineyard is perched high above Russian River Valley atop the westernmost ridge of the Mayacamas Mountains that divide Napa and Sonoma counties. This unique quadrant of Sonoma County boasts a unique well-drained volcanic soil with exposure to the North, West and South and a semi maritime influence distinctively its own. The eight thousand vines in the vineyard are planted to Grenache (Alban clone) and two types of Syrah clones, the 877 and 470. At 1,100 feet, high elevation and exposure to the elements force the vines to struggle producing fruit with exceptional concentration of flavor. Cooling breezes from the Russian River Valley below and largely dry farming add depth and complexity. Petrichor fruit is intensely site driven, displaying vibrant color and aromatics, sturdy tannins and natural acidity. The Petrichor Vineyard is meticulously managed and farmed by Lee Martinelli Jr. and his team.

Petrichor “Les Trois”: 86% Syrah, 14% Grenache. A blend of Grenache and the 877 and 470 Syrah clones from vines densely planted on 2.5 acres in volcanic soil at 1100 feet above sea level on Redwood Hill. 50% whole cluster fermentation. 10% new oak. Native yeast. Unfiltered. Picked at 23 & 24 brix. 13.6% alcohol.
